I connect social and environmental questions with spatial evidence: forest-fire prediction, glacial-lake hazards, malaria hotspots, food security, ethnobotanical relationship and regional development. This site collects the open-source tools and open data I use and teach, and includes a free WebGIS for Indian topographic sheets.

About

Across disciplines, mapped in space

I am a geographer and geospatial analyst. My work joins remote sensing and GIS to regional development, public policy, food security, health, traditional medicine, disaster management, economics and the study of human impact on the environment as well as DGCA Certified Drone Pilot (RPC)

I work in open-source GIS, professional GIS and WebGIS. As JNU coordinator for the IIRS-ISRO outreach programme I have coordinated 141 geospatial courses, from GNSS basics and SAR to AI/ML for Geodata Analysis. I have worked as a consultant for UNFPA, ISI Delhi, IIHMR, the HP State Disaster Management Authority, Save the Children, The United Nations and many more....

Open resources

Open-source tools & open data, by category

Free and open-source software, data portals and learning material for GIS, remote sensing, WebGIS, geo-data science and AI/ML/DL. Indian sources are tagged India.

WebGIS tool

India Topographic Sheet Finder

A free WebGIS built entirely on open-source libraries (Leaflet, Turf.js, Geoman) and open data (OpenStreetMap, SOI index grids, India-WRIS, LGD).

  • Everest (old) series and the corresponding Open Series Map (OSM) sheet numbers at 1:1M, 1:250K, 1:50K and 1:25K
  • Search by sheet number (e.g. 53H/2 or H43X2), place name or coordinates
  • Satellite grids: Landsat WRS-2 path/row, Sentinel-2 MGRS tiles, MODIS/VIIRS h/v, UTM zones, 1° DEM tiles
  • India states, districts (LGD), river basins, sub-basins and watersheds
  • Draw an area of interest, buffer any point or shape, measure it, and export to GeoJSON or KML
